Erez Law is currently investigating Hancock Whitney Investment Services broker Robin Platt (CRD# 2584058), who is alleged to recommend Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) Ltd., a Bermuda-based annuity and life insurance company that serves the needs of high net worth clients around the globe.
According to public records, Platt recommended Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) Ltd. to her clients as a safe investment for conservative investors; however, Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) Ltd. has suspended monthly income distributions as of 2020. It is also reported that it is not likely that Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) Ltd. will have enough assets to pay back the full amount owed to fixed-rate contract holders.
A former client recently filed a FINRA arbitration against Platt. The client, a senior investor, invested $1.25 million in Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) Ltd., making up the majority of his investment portfolio. The customer sought safe and stable investments to preserve his capital. Regrettably, due to the clients age and desired risk tolerance, the investments were unsuitable and he suffered losses of his entire investment in Northstar Financial Services (Bermuda) Ltd. The complaint alleges unsuitability, misrepresentations and omissions, negligence, failure to supervise, breach of contract, and breach of other duties.
Platt has been registered with Hancock Whitney Investment Services Inc. in Mandeville, Louisiana since 2013.
Platt has been the subject of two customer complaints, one of which was denied, according to her CRD report.
May 2021. “The customer alleges that the NorthStar annuities that were recommended for him in 2016 were unsuitable and that certain information regarding NorthStar’s products was misrepresented. The Firm and the Advisor dispute these allegations and note that any issues concerning NorthStar’s ability to meet its contractual obligations arose after the sale of the annuities and were caused entirely by the actions and misconduct/mismanagement of new NorthStar ownership.” The customer is seeking $1,250,000 in damages in this pending complaint.
Pursuant to FINRA Rules, member firms are responsible for supervising a broker’s activities during the time the broker is registered with the firm. Therefore, Hancock Whitney Investment Services Inc. may be liable for investment or other losses suffered by Platt’s customers.
